Troubleshooting Guide
Common Issues and Solutions
Possible causes:
- Invalid or expired API key
- Insufficient API credits/quota
- Network connectivity issues
- API provider service outage
Solutions:
- Verify your API key is valid and active
- Test your API key connection
- Ensure your API account is funded: If the error mentions "insufficient credits", "quota", or "payment", add a payment method or top up credits at your provider: OpenAI Billing or Anthropic Billing. Content generation will not work without available credits.
- Check your API provider's status page
- Try again after a few minutes
Possible causes:
- OAuth authorization was cancelled
- Insufficient permissions granted
- Token expired or revoked
- Platform-specific requirements not met
Solutions:
- Try connecting again and ensure you complete the authorization
- Grant all requested permissions
- Disconnect and reconnect the platform
- For Facebook/Instagram/Threads/LinkedIn/TikTok/Bluesky: These platforms use Outstand for connection management. Ensure you have the necessary permissions and a valid account type (Business/Creator for Instagram/Threads)
- For WordPress self-hosted: Verify HTTPS is enabled and Application Passwords are supported (WordPress 5.6+)
- For Bluesky: Ensure you have a valid Bluesky account and that Outstand is properly configured
Possible causes:
- Connection token expired
- Platform connection is disconnected
- Content violates platform guidelines
- Platform API rate limits exceeded
Solutions:
- Check connection status in Set Up → Social Media Connections
- Reconnect the platform if needed
- Review the post content for policy violations
- Check the scheduled post status and error messages
- Wait and retry if rate limits were exceeded
Possible causes:
- File format not supported (must be .docx, .pdf, or .epub)
- File size exceeds 50MB limit
- File is corrupted or password-protected
- Network issues during upload
Solutions:
- Ensure file is .docx, .pdf, or .epub and under 50 MB
- For text books, ensure the file has more than 500 words of readable text
- Prefer .docx over PDF — scanned PDFs often produce no usable text
- Remove password protection if present
- Try uploading again with a stable internet connection
Possible causes:
- Browser cache issues
- JavaScript errors
- Network connectivity issues
Solutions:
- Clear browser cache and cookies
- Try a different browser
- Disable browser extensions temporarily
- Refresh the page (Ctrl+F5 or Cmd+Shift+R)
- Check browser console for errors
Possible causes:
- Invalid Bluesky account credentials
- Bluesky account not properly set up
- Outstand service configuration issues
- Network connectivity issues
- Bluesky API temporary issues
Solutions:
- Verify your Bluesky account credentials are correct
- Ensure your Bluesky account is active and accessible
- Check that Outstand is properly configured in your account
- Try disconnecting and reconnecting your Bluesky account
- Check your internet connection
- Wait a few minutes and retry if Bluesky's API is experiencing issues
- See our Connecting Bluesky guide for detailed setup instructions
Possible causes:
- No AI API key configured
- File has insufficient readable text (under 500 words)
- PDF is image-only or scanned
- Large book still processing (10–20 minutes)
Solutions:
- Add an AI key in Set Up if missing
- Open book details and click Analyze Book
- Re-upload as .docx if PDF analysis failed
- Wait for background analysis to complete on large manuscripts
Possible causes:
- Advanced Scheduling tier feature not enabled on your plan
- Content type is copy-only (X, Medium, Reddit, etc.)
- No platform connection for the content type
Solutions:
- Check if your plan includes Advanced Scheduling — upgrade via Upsells if needed
- All users can still view scheduled posts at Content → Scheduled
- For copy-only types, use the Copy button and publish manually
- Connect the matching platform on Set Up for the current author
Possible causes:
- Wrong author (pen name) selected in the navbar
- Sub-user viewing a limited author scope
Solutions:
- Use the author switcher in the top navbar to select the correct pen name
- On Set Up and Books, confirm the author context bar shows the right author
- See the Managing Authors guide
Substack email publishing always sends posts to drafts. You must log in to Substack and publish manually. Substack does not support scheduling via API.
Alternatively, generate Substack content as copy-only and paste it directly into the Substack editor.
Possible causes:
- Advanced Scheduling tier not enabled
- Content is not in Draft status
- Content type is copy-only (X, Medium, Reddit, Substack, Newsletter)
Solutions:
- Upgrade via Upsells if Advanced Scheduling is not on your plan
- Filter by Status = Draft on Generated Content
- Use Schedule All Drafts or Content → Scheduled → Bulk Schedule to schedule without checkboxes
Possible causes:
- Calendar is filtered to a different month, author, book, or platform
- Posts failed during scheduling (check Content → Scheduled for Failed status)
- Wrong author selected in the navbar
- Scheduled date is outside the visible month
Solutions:
- Check Content → Scheduled — a results summary appears after bulk scheduling
- Failed posts appear in red on the calendar; use Retry after fixing errors
- Clear calendar filters or navigate to the correct month
- Confirm the correct author is selected
After bulk scheduling, check the results summary at the top of Content → Scheduled. Failed posts are highlighted in red.
Common fixes:
- Read the error message on the failed row
- Add a missing image to the content, then click Retry
- Verify the platform connection is still active on Set Up
- Ensure content type matches the selected connection (Instagram content needs an Instagram connection)
For Outstand platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Threads, LinkedIn), Scheduled means the platform accepted the post — it will change to Posted after the platform publishes it at the scheduled time.
If the scheduled time has passed and status is still Scheduled, wait a few minutes. If it remains Scheduled for over an hour past the scheduled time, check the connection on Set Up or use Post Now to publish immediately.
